Chairman's Award for Innovation: Wide-Area Sun Ray

Tarik Ono, Tom O'Neill, Russ Brown,
flanked by Scott McNealy (L) and Greg Papadopoulos (R)

The Wide-Area Sun Ray software was developed in Sun Labs to demonstrate that existing Sun Ray hardware could, using software compression, enable Sun Rays to be used over wide area networks like DSL or cable modems. This proof of concept has led to a product plan for a launch of wide- area Sun Ray software (now known as the Broadband Sun Ray). The Wan Ray also demonstrated that compression makes Sun Rays work better, even locally, because the systems use significantly less network bandwidth than normal Sun Rays. This development extends the same total cost of ownership and security benefits of thin clients from the enterprise to remote use, where the costs of system administration and security concerns are significantly higher.
