Elected to National Academy of Engineering

James Gosling, Sun Fellow, VP, CTO Software

With a mission to promote the technologic welfare of the nation by bringing together committees of experts in all areas of scientific and technological endeavor, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) marshals the knowledge and insights of eminent members of the engineering profession. These experts serve pro bono to address critical national issues and give advice to the federal government and the public.

The NAE is one of the four US Academies organized at the national level: the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council.

James' election brings Sun's membership in the NAE to five, joining Andy Bechtolsheim, Bob Sproull, Guy Steele and Ivan Sutherland, all previous recipients of this honor.

James will be inducted into the NAE on October 3, 2004, in a ceremony to be held in Washington, DC.
