Sun Labs EuropeIn November of 2000, Sun Labs expanded out of the USA. A third Sun Labs site, located in France's alpine 'Silicon Valley', is hard at work. The Lab is housed just outside the city of Grenoble, at Sun's International Center for Network Computing (ICNC).
Headed by Lisa Pavey, the Lab is now accepting research proposals from potential principal investigators in the following areas:
Sun Labs worldwide is interested in applied research, leading to technology transfer and with a view to improving Sun products. Graduate and post-doctoral researchers with a background in computer science, computer engineering or closely related fields come to Sun Labs to build a career that's intensely focused, creative and at the same time grounded in reality. Sun Labs Europe, with its focus on providing the technology for the networks of the future, is already attracting interest and attention. Not least because its location, right in the heart of Europe, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, offers unparalleled quality of life.
The Grenoble region houses the European synchrotron nuclear research facility, as well as Xerox Parc, and a growing host of computing companies. Grenoble is a young and thriving city, with cinemas (showing in multiple languages), shops, nightlife and a large international community. International schools, and welcome facilities of all kinds exist to help foreign visitors fit in. Outdoor activities such a skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, hang-gliding and so on can be found half an hour from the Lab. Extend the drive to two hours, and you can be sipping an aperitif on Lake Geneva, Switzerland, or eating ice cream in Turin, Italy. Spain is five hours away... Since November 2000, Sun Labs Europe has grown to house around 30 researchers. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
