DEAN LONG
Dean Long, a Sun Senior Staff Engineer, received his BA in Computer
Science from UC, San Diego and went on to UC, Santa Cruz for his MS in
Computer and Information Science.
Dean had done some work on Sprite OS, so when Peter Kessler called him
about interning on Spring OS in Sun Labs, it sounded like a good match to
him. "Doing the technical work seemed to come naturally, but being in a
team where everyone was more experienced than me was a new experience and
made it more challenging." Dean's most memorable internship experience
was, "the 1992 SMLI/SunSoft water fight, of course!" But he almost forgot
about the Angel Island picnic: "Going out on the bay on the catamaran was
the highlight for me."
What impacted his decision to join Sun Labs? Peter Kessler from the
Spring OS project, and "probably the invention of Java and the beginning
of JavaSoft which came at a perfect time, so that I had an opportunity to
work on something new."
As a staff member, Dean has several patents spread across the projects
he's worked on including: JavaOS, PersonalJava, and now J2ME CDC HI.
And then, there's always time for foosball!
TARIK ONO
Tarik Ono, Sun Staff Engineer, received her MSc from the University of
Wuerzburg, Germany and another MSc from the University of British
Columbia, Canada.
She came to Sun Labs after her supervisor at UBC, Dr. Mark Greenstreet,
arranged a trip "down here for me, where I met with some Sun Labs
researchers about interning for them." Of her experience as an intern,
she remembers all that free food (this was 1999) and the holiday parties
of that era. Commenting on the culture, she recalls the fact that most Sun
Labs researchers were very accessible, even to interns. They weren't
"hiding behind closed doors with an Admin as guard."
Impacting her decision to join Sun Labs was her desire to continue working
with Russell Brown on the Wan Ray Thin Client, for which she and her team
subsequently won the Sun Chairman's Award.
Tarik appreciates the cultural diversity and beauty of San Francisco, and
whenever possible, spends her time painting.
KRZYSZTOF PALACZ
Krzysztof Palacz, Member Technical Staff, has a PhD from Purdue Unversity.
Krzysztof always believed that Sun's impact on the computing industry is
disproportionately large compared to its size, and based off this idea, chose to intern at Sun.
The experience of being an intern helped Krzysztof even after he became a
staff member: "I had the luxury of being able to continue my Intern
project as a staff member. When I started as a full-time employee, I
already knew the members of my group and I was already familiar with the
work environment, tools and techniques."
Living in the Bay Area, according to Krzysztof, "offers a unique
combination of culture and nature that is hard to find elsewhere. And it
certainly feels very welcoming to newcomers, such as myself."
