Spotlight: Interns to Staff Members - The Metamorphosis

Spotlight: Interns to Staff Members - The Metamorphosis

Cont'd from pg. 4

CHRIS TSILIPOUNIDAKIS

Chris Tsilipounidakis - now a Sun Marketing Business Analyst who received his BS in Management Information Systems from San Jose State University, California -- came to Sun Labs as a high school intern.

"My high school (Gunn) had a College and Career Center and I applied for a position as a high school intern working in the Labs. Jeanie Treichel was my hiring manager then and the values and advice I received from her is a large reason I am still here seven years later. She helped me grow as an employee and, more importantly, as a person."

Chris will never forget the day in the Labs when the Newt group demo'd the first ever Sun Ray, and he described it as "an unforgettable experience -- to be a witness to the new technology." On Sun's culture, Chris believes that "Sun is a company that does not judge the way you look or how you think. As long as you provide a positive influence to your group and organization, you can be as creative as you'd like."

DAVID VENGEROV

David Vengerov, a Sun Staff Engineer, earned his BS in Math, and an MS in EE and CS from MIT; from Stanford University, David also earned an MS in Engineering Economic Systems and Operations Research as well as a PhD in Management Science and Engineering.

The possibility of doing scientific research applied to real-world problems was what enticed David to intern at Sun Labs. Here, he remembers the Bash (free food) on Friday nights. As an intern, he developed and implemented a nonparametric regression model for predicting cache missrates in very large system configurations that cannot even be simulated. What he especially enjoyed about Sun's culture was the freedom he had in managing his project and the possibilities he saw for engaging in other interesting projects.

Since becoming a staff member, he has written two technical reports, and is working on a third. He plans to publish all of them as conference/journal papers. In addition, David has submitted eleven patent disclosures as the primary inventor, most of which have already been filed with the US Patent Bureau.

In California, he loves hiking in the mountains during the summer and skiing during the winter.

RICH ZIMERING

Rich Zimering -- with a BS from Duke in Electrical Engineering & Physics; MPhil studies and EE from Cambridge University; and MS studies, EE, Stanford -- also received Churchill, Fulbright, NSF, and Department of Defense Graduate Fellowships.

He did his internship at Sun Labs and is now a Staff Engineer in Sun's Scalable System Group, Rock CPU design.

Rich decided to work at Sun after talking with George Taylor about the microprocessor R&D going on in Sun Labs. At the time "I was pretty green about real industry R&D, and thought it would be a great way to jump right in." He worked on the P1000 SPARC cpu design and some interesting work on logic synthesis targeted at ECL technology.

Looking back as a staff member, Rich realized that "being an intern really showed me the real world of technology compared with academic research. I learned a lot of practical concepts about working in a fast paced industrial setting, without feeling like I had to absorb it all immediately. It was a smooth way to transition from academic environments to industry."

As an intern, Rich thought the Angel Island picnics were unreal! And being invited back as a SML alum was great. "My first summer at Sun Labs was my first time living in the Bay Area. I quickly realized I wanted to come back, and since then I don't think I would want to live anywhere else, especially for the outdoor activities. My current pastime is running; I'm training for a marathon in June."
