Steve Heller is a Research Director of Sun Microsystems Laboratories. His team focuses on multi-core computing, from design & simulation to architecture to languages & compilers to optimization. Steve also leads Sun's External Research Office.

Previously, Steve built the Java[tm] Technology Research Group (JTech), where he served as the Principal Investigator for five years. JTech focused on issues of high-performance and scalable JVMs, especially garbage collection, just-in-time execution, and synchronization, as well as fundamental issues of synchronization and scalability. There's a lot of garbage on the internet, and someone has to pick it up!

Steve received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT. Then, at Thinking Machines Corporation, he designed high-performance communication algorithms for the CM-2 and CM-5 massively parallel super-computers, using "all the wires; all the time."
