Jonathan Kaplan is a researcher in the Collaborative Environments group in Sun Microsystems Laboratories. As an architect of Project Wonderland, he focuses on how to build extensible, secure and scalable virtual worlds for business and education collaboration. His contributions to Wonderland include the core communications APIs, web administration and implementation of security and federation.

Prior projects in Sun Labs include Meeting Central, a suite of tools to augment audio conferences; Porta-Person, a telepresence device; and Conference Manager, an AJAX prototype of a conference management tool based on SIP servlets. He has published several papers in conferences such as CSCW and CHI, and is a frequent speaker at events like JavaOne.

His research interests include virtual worlds, collaborative computing, computer-mediated communication, distributed systems, multi-user cooperative environments, security and user interfaces.

Before joining the Labs, Jonathan worked on system management software for Sun's volume systems. His work included hardware monitoring, as well as fault analysis and reporting. Jonathan is also a co-author of the book J2EE Design Patterns from O'Reilly.
