Gerard Fernando is a researcher for Sun Microsystems Laboratories, working on the OMS (Open Media Stack) project.

His research interests include TV and HDTV signal processing.

Fernando came to Sun Labs in 1991 and has been involved in several media projects and products. Prior to joining Sun he worked at Philips Electronics in Europe, where his focus was on research and development of TV and HDTV signal processing and display technology.

Fernando has participated and led standards activities in ISO/MPEG and IETF where the main focus of standardization activities has been on audio-visual media, including Java in MPEG. Recently he managed and was the technical lead on the Media Central product program.

Fernando has several patents from his work at Sun and Phillips and has several publications as well.
