4G Wireless
Research of next generation cellular network
infrastructure that supports IP only devices.
Alter-Ego
Investigate software agents that dynamically support
personalized user services when users are disconnected or have limited
mobile access.
Checkspot
Process checkpoint/restart for the Solaris[TM] Operating Environment.
The Collaborative Computing Group (COCO)
To conceive, prototype, deploy, and analyze novel technology for
collaboration. In particular, we were exploring ways of
applying the Java[tm] technology to support the
collaborative activity of groups that are distributed across
different locations.
Exact GC For KVM
Exact and compacting garbage collection for
K Virtual Machine[TM] (KVM).
Forest
The Forest project was defining and developing Orthogonal Persistence
for the Java platform (OPJ) and evaluating its use in a
variety of application areas.
IC CAD Tools/PLAID
New ASIC design methodology that merges logical and
physical design processes.
ICS - Interactive Collaborative Systems
Sun Microsystems Laboratories' Interactive Collaborative Systems group was working on
investigating the feasibility and usability issues of a network-based virtual space.
Java[TM] Car
Explore delivery of Java-based automotive services to a
wireless network enabled car. The "JavaCar" consisted of a small server
within the car serving an internal network of devices such as speakers,
microphone, camera, Java dashboard, Java[TM] Ring reader, and GPS device.
Research consisted of building the internal "component architecture"
for the car itself, and the architecture for delivery of services to
the car in a safe, secure, effective way.
K-Services
Simplified device configuration for small devices.
Kanban
The Kanban group was (mostly) concerned with the technology and
applications of `just in time' or `dynamic' compiler technology.
MAPS (Mobile Automotive Platforms and Services)
Enhancement of off-the-shelf products to provide capabilities for the mobile worker.
Netword Modelling
Theoretical network models for Sun systems
and applied to simulation tools to create toolset.
PJAMA
Orthogonal Persistence for the Java platform (OPJ).
Radio Port
Exploration of radio communication for configuring,
monitoring, and diagnosing integrated circuits and system
components.
Reliable Multicast
Libraries and services for building multicast-aware
applications.
Self
Designed for expressive power and malleability, Self combined a pure,
prototype-based object model with uniform access to
state and behavior. Unlike other languages, Self allowed objects to
inherit state and to change their patterns of inheritance
dynamically.
Service Location Protocol
Thermal Technologies
This was an ongoing program to investigate thermal
management technologies for future high power density systems at the chip,
module, and systems level. The project included: high efficiency micro
heat exchangers, application of CVD diamond, and liquid loops.
Walkabout
The Walkabout project investigated retargetable binary translation techniques
to aid in the optimization and migration of applications to new machines.
Retargetability enables the support of new machines at low cost through machine
descriptions, and allows experimentation with various instruction sets and
architectures.
Wireless LAN Pilot Program
Wireless LAN test environment for
conducting nomadic and mobile computing research.
Zero Configuration Network
Automatic IP networking in settings that
temporarily or permanently lack administration and configuration.
| |
