Project DReaM is an open-source royalty-free DRM focusing on linking digital rights to network identity

Primary Research Category: Network Clients

Project Overview

This project team is currently focused on Project DReaM - an open source, royalty-free DRM that focuses on linking digital rights to network identity. DReaM is a major focus of the Open Media Commons (OpenMediaCommons.org) initiative. The open source project for Project DReaM is: https://dream.dev.java.net in the Java community. The Open Media Commons website is: http://OpenMediaCommons.org.

The goal of Project DReaM is to develop a solution for the distribution of digital content, focused on authenticating people and roles, not just devices; to address the application of DRM technology to a wide range of content and situations, including personal rights management, the privacy of health records and compliance management for businesses dealing with Sarbanes-Oxley; and to create an open environment where creators, content owners, consumers, network operators, technology providers and consumer electronics device manufacturers can work together to address the technical problems associated with DRM.

For more than ten years, this engineering team has been leading media standardization efforts including Sun's MPEG standards activities. This project team was responsible for developing essential technology (patents in the area of MPEG-J) which are required to implement critical elements of MPEG-4 Systems.
