The JOE Project

Our goal is to design APIs, abstractions, and implementation techniques that allow people from all walks of computing to - figuratively speaking - spend their whole programming life without having to leave the Java platform. Specifically, we are aiming to design an easy-to-use, complete, and scalable Java platform that seamlessly applies to cluster programming.

As our roots are in the Barcelona project, we are also concerned about scalability at the level of individual virtual machines. Thus we will be designing and implementing further refinements and improvements to our main experimental platform, the Multi-Tasking Virtual Machine (MVM), now downloadable from java.net. MVM has already had an impact on the J2ME space; our current focus is on the Standard and Enterprise Editions of the Java platform. Related to this target is our work on standardizing the Application Isolation API and the Resource Consumption Management API.
