Sun Labs Conference Manager

SunTM Labs Conference Manager

Conference Manager is a web 2.0 application for managing, monitoring, and participating in conference calls. It works in a standard web browser using AJAX components for real-time updates of conference activity. Users interact with the Conference Manager List view to set up conference calls, set passcodes, and manage meeting permissions. From this view, they can also join the call with a single click. Conference Manager will dial out to them on either a regular phone or a SIP-based software phone. During the live call, users can see who is on the call and who is speaking as well as interact with a variety of in-call features. Users without access to a computer can dial-in and use the Conference Manager features from their telephone keypad.

Conference Manager is based on the SunTM Labs Voice Bridge which handles Voice over IP (VoIP) audio communication, including standard telephone features such as DTMF tone detection. The Bridge also does advanced audio mixing to support features such as private voice chat and individual volume control. Additionally, it supports high-fidelity audio up to CD-quality stereo.

Conference Manager uses SIP servlets and demonstrates the ability to use both enterprise and multimedia data in a single application. It is implemented on top of a JSR-289 prototype, demostrating the possibilities of this enhancement to the SIP Servlet specification. Conference Manager is packaged as a standard enterprise application and can be deployed in any JavaTM Enterprise Edition (Java EE) application server. The Conference Manager API allows telephony functionality to be integrated into other enterprise applications.

Standards-Based Implementation

Conference Manager is based on a set of standards for easy integration into the enterprise. The standards include:

  • Java EE 5
  • SIP Servlet 1.0 (JSR 116)
  • SIP Servlet 1.1 (JSR 289)
  • Java EE Connector Architecture
  • SIP (RFC 3261)
  • RTP (RFC 3550)
Telephony

Based on the SIP standard, Conference Manager can be used with any SIP-based software phone. It can also integrate with landline or cell phones using a SIP gateway connected to a standard telephone network.

Conference Manager includes an integrated software phone which can be launched directly from the web brawser. This SIP-based software phone registers with the application server, allowing the user to click to dial without the need to remember a SIP address.

Conference Call User Interface

When a call is in progress, users can see a list of names of conference call participants. Speaking indicators appear to the left of the names of the people who are currently speaking. Mute and Away features allow attendees to see who is on mute and who has stepped away from the phone. A simple voting mechanism allows participants to check for understanding or poll for information.

Reliability and Scalability

Conference Manager data is replicated by the application server for a high degree of reliability. It is also a horizontally scalable application. Conference calls are able to span multiple Voice Bridges, allowing for maximum flexiblity and enterprise-level scalability.
