1/11/00 Spotless new feature list

New features in the Spotless 1/11/00 build.
  • Many bug fixes
  • Revised Class files
  • Exact garbage collection
    • Stack pointers tracked and treated as pointers
    • No confusion based on bad integer values
  • Compacting garbage collection
    • No stack fragmentation
    • Garbage collection slower, but occurs less frequently
  • Extended heap space
    • Heap > 60k now allowed, up to the amount of free memory available
  • Application level orthogonal persistence
    • Applications can be made persistent simply by switching to another application
    • Program state correctly saved and restored when switching to/from applications, like any other Palm application.
  • Application level program migration
    • Inactive applications (created through persistence above) can be beamed to a different Palm connected organizer
    • Works across PalmPilot types (III -> V and V -> III tested)
    • Requires the second PalmPilot to also have the 1/11/00 Spotless VM installed

1/11/00 Spotless bug list

Current bugs in the 1/11/00 build of the Spotless VM, including demo class bugs:
  • Starcruiser crashes on exit.  Bug related to a corruption of the main class stack frame.
  • Notetaker - Potential race condition in restoring from persistence. Solved with a IO.println call, but not fixed.
  • Some applications currently do not function correctly on a Visor. Use with extreme caution on this device.
  • Unconfirmed report that prolonged use can cause a memory corruption error. Make sure to back your device up regularly.

Please send any bug reports to Matthew Seidl, the current maintainer of this package.
