Sun Microsystems and the HANA Alliance
in the Participation Age

December 14, 2005 -The convergence of the media/entertainment, broadband, and telecom industries is driving new economies and business models, and allowing more people to access the network. With the proliferation of networked people and devices, and with the steady price drop of high definition (HD) TVs, the time is right to develop a home networking standard that specifically addresses the performance needs for HDTV.

Sun has always believed that open standards drive innovation, lower the barrier of entry and create new market opportunities. By developing a standards-based secure environment for the distribution of content, the HANA alliance can help improve the consumer experience, expand the community of networked media devices and lower the costs for content providers.

Your Content - Anywhere, Anytime

With more than 20 years of experience building highly secure, standards-based networks, Sun brings to the alliance a deep understanding of networking technology needed to enable a secure, HANA-compliant home environment. In addition, Sun's Open Media Commons initiative (an open-source community project to develop royalty-free codecs and digital rights management (DRM) solutions) is a natural fit for HANA's content protection system. Sun Labs is currently in the process of developing a HANA compliant implementation of its DReaM (DRM everywhere available) technology, designed to enable a home environment in which personal content can be securely shared across PCs, HD TVs and other AV devices.

Sun is a founding member of HANA, along with Charter Communications, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. NBC Universal, Samsung. As a founding member, Sun has a seat on the HANA board, along with full voting rights on proposed specifications.
