Project Sun SPOT Goes Live!

March 7, 2006 - Project Sun SPOT (Sun Small Programmable Object Technology) will soon be available to Java programmers, researchers, educators and hobbyists. This innovative, battery operated platform, created in Sun labs to enable development of wireless sensor networks, robotics and personal consumer electronics, will be demonstrated at Sun's 2006 Worldwide Education & Research Conference in New York this week.

Powered by a small Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) virtual machine written almost entirely in Java, Project Sun SPOT provides a way to easily, affordably and quickly build Java-based sensor applications that run directly on the central processing unit (CPU) without any underlying operating system.

In May, 2006, a Project Sun SPOT developer kit will be available that includes two complete Sun SPOT devices with demo sensor boards, a base station Sun SPOT to connect to your development machine, and all the software development tools and cables required to start developing applications for your Sun SPOT. The projected price is $499.
