Sun @ Grace Hopper Conference 2007

"I Invent the Future"
Sun @ Grace Hopper Conference 2007

October 17, 2007 - Twenty four members of the Sun Engineering Staff staff will represent Sun at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (GHC) held this year in Orlando, Florida, October 17-20. The GHC is presented by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Sun is a Platinum Sponsor for 2007, continuing the company's support for women in computing - Sun sponsored the GHC in 2002, 2004, and 2006 (GHC used to be held every 2 years).

Sun's attendees at the GHC are representative of the the broad and diverse opportunities Sun affords to women in computing and technology, ranging from researchers at Sun Labs, and engineers in Microelectronics, Software and IT, to managers and directors in Sales and Human Relations. Sun's contingent is heavily involved in the GHC activities. Ten of the women are participating in panels and BOFs, while three of the members, Gilda Garreton, Sun Labs, Valerie Fenwick, Software and Katy Dickinson, CTO, are Official Bloggers for Hopper 2007. Gilda's blog is in Spanish.

Gilda's particular focus this year is on Latinas in Computing: Latinas in GHC07, which will produce three events in Orlando:

  1. A panel titled "Successful Latinas Opening Doors to the Future: Advancing Latinas in Computing", with six distinguished Latinas from the Industry and the Academia participating.
  2. A BOF session titled "Latinas in Computing" on Oct. 19th. This session is intended as a follow-on to the panel.
  3. A lunch event on Oct. 19th.
The Sun contingent will also staff a Sun Recruiting table on Thursday and Friday evenings, will participate in Sponsor Night on Friday, and will give away a Sun SPOT, Sun's prize as part of the Sponsor's Raffle.

"The seventh in a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today's technology fields, including computer science, information technology, research and engineering. Past Grace Hopper Celebrations have resulted in collaborative proposals, networking, mentoring, and increased visibility for the contributions of women in computing."
