Project Darkstar at the Nordic Game Conference, May 19-20, Malmö, Sweden
Project Darkstar at the Nordic Game Conference, May 19-20, Malmö, Sweden

May 18, 2009 - Expected to draw 1500 participants from around the globe, the sixth gathering of the Nordic and international games industry features two full days of conference sessions, industry and educational exhibits, a career expo and a number of special events. Participants will include members of the press, games industry, academics, and individual developers.

Project Darkstar, an Open Source project sponsored by Sun Microsystems Laboratories, is an easy to use, open source software infrastructure for the development and execution of horizontally scalable online games, virtual worlds, and social networking applications. Project Darkstar's presence at NGC is possible because of the combined efforts of community contributors from seven different organizations. This group effort not only speaks very well to the strength of the Darkstar community, but also ensures that 2009 Nordic Game Conference attendees will have a great opportunity to learn about the Project Darkstar technology and community.

Nordic Game Conference Contributors

Game developer Emanuel Greisen will be showing Gamalocus' Darkstar-based online strategy game "Call of the Kings." Emanuel, aka "Oak" on the Darkstar Community forums, and his company Gamalocus are located in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Modern Society Online by Tuonela Productions
Jussi Autio and Ville Rauma, of Tuonela Productions, will be showing their Darkstar-based game Modern Society Online. MSO is the online version of Tuonela's Modern Society game, which took second place honors is last year's Nordic Serious Games Conference. Tuonela Productions is based in Oulu, Finland.

Enric Rodríguez Royo, or enrodri86, is currently a student at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He took runner-up honors in the student division of the recent Project Darkstar Developer Challenge for the work he did with his AuthServer project, which enables game developers to more easily set up customizable authentication servers for their games. Enric will be showing his AuthServer project in the booth.

The strong support of Esko Luontola, aka Jackal van Orf, and Gorm Lai, coordinator of the Danish IGDA and the Nordic Game Jam, has been instrumental behind the scenes in driving efforts to bring Darkstar to the Nordic region, and to the Nordic Game Conference in particular.

Darkstris - Multiplayer co-op Tetris game
Finally, Andres Martinez Quijano, aka quixote_arg, has contributed (from Buenos Aires) a setup of Darkstris, his multiplayer Tetris-like game for the Darkstar booth. Conference attendees will be able to challenge each other in a Darkstris game from their own browsers. Andres took first prize in the Project Darkstar Developer challenge for his Darkstris entry.

Sun will be represented by Jennifer Kotzen, Project Darkstar technology marketing, who will participate in a panel discussion about open source technologies for game development, as well as in the Sun-sponsored Darkstar Booth.
