| April 30, 2007 - Initial Release of the Zahns Airport Project. This release comemmorates the 27th anniversary of the last take-off from Zahns Airport. Many thanks to everyone who assisted with this project! |
The idea is to re-create Zahns Airport (Amityville, NY) as accurately as possible as a scenery package for the X-Plane flight simulator. Once loaded into the simulator, pilots will once again be able to land and take-off from Zahns.
Zahns Airport (AYZ) was built in 1936, and torn down in 1980. In its heyday, it was one of the busiest General Aviation airports on the east coast. It was home to two flight schools, an Air National Guard station, and the Civil Air Patrol. It was also featured in the Jimmy Stuart film, The Spirit of St. Loius. In the movie, when you see Charles Lindbergh taking off from Roosevelt Field, he is actually taking off from Zahns runway 18!
Comments and suggestions are most welcome -- please email me.
If you flew at Zahns (or are familiar with the airport) I'd love to hear from you! Please see this page for information I'm still looking for.
If you flew at Zahns and are interested in helping, please visit my Information Still Needed page for a short list of information I'm still looking for. Additionally, you may take a peek at the two QuickTime movies of the simulation, and let me know if anything looks amiss.
Also, in late 2006, I'll be looking for beta-testers to try out the simulation. Drop me a note if you are interested! (You will need the x-plane software.)
Thanks so much!

Thanks to Josh Stoff, curator of Long Island's Cradle of Aviation Museum, I have obtained a copy of the original Zahns "Traffic pattern and Regulations" document (1951), and made it available as a PDF file.Download a PDF version. |
